About the Institute

Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. For over 20 years, we have been at the forefront of mental health research and have maintained a reputation as the face of mental health research and treatment in Australia. 

Through our unique ‘translational’ research approach, we turn our world-class research into treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products. The Role

The role of an Instructional Designer is to provide education resource development capability to the Black Dog Institute’s Implementation & Operations Directorate. Supporting the Resource Development Manager, the role plays an integral part in the development and customisation of instructor lead training (ILT) including face to face, virtual and/or blended training to meet the specific needs of internal and external clients including health professionals, schools and workplace audiences.

Duties & Responsibilities

Client Liaison

  • Provide excellent customer service to external and internal clients at all levels of business.

Adult Learning 

  • Consult with internal and external stakeholders to analyse and identify learning needs to develop and/ or customise existing materials.
  • Manage the end-to-end instructional design role for face to face, virtual and/or blended training materials.
  • Work with subject matter experts (SMEs) to scope, design and develop new and engaging learning activities and assessments for instructor lead training (ILT) that apply adult learning principles and reflect appreciation of diverse audiences.
  • Provide advice on educational concepts, delivery modalities, and instructional design as required to projects/research containing educational components.
  • Modify and maintain existing workplace, health professional and school training materials and support resources in consultation with SMEs and team members in line with organisational standards.

Administration

  • Continuously identify opportunities to progress the service offering and to maintain high quality standard learning resources e.g. maintain master content database for all learning content, identifying and detailing key learning points.

Skills & Experience Required 

Essential Criteria

1. Tertiary qualification in adult education, Certificate IV in Training & Assessment or similar qualifications and min of two (2) years’ experience in instructional design.

2. Experience of using contemporary instructional design and adult learning principles to design, develop, implement, and review learning materials.

3. Demonstrated experience as a content creator with evidence of applied best practice adult learning methodologies.

4. Demonstrated ability to develop creative and cost-effective learning solutions suited to diverse audience groups.

5. Ability to work autonomously and drive process with minimal direction.

6. Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines on multiple projects, with the ability to be proactive and use initiative.

7. Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service to external and internal clients.

8. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail.

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience in project management.

2. Experience in the Not For Profit sector

3. Proficient in visual design and experience developing training collateral (incl Power Point, Adobe Acrobat Pro)

4. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite eg Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
