Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick, NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Through effective communications, we lead Australia’s population health response to suicide prevention and champion the ongoing conversation of mental health in our society.

Desired Skills and Experience

The Role

Reporting to the Communications Manager, the purpose of the Communications Officer is to assist in the delivery and implementation of key communication and marketing activities.

This role will focus on community management and moderation of social media channels, writing media releases and content for the website, assisting in reporting, and working closely with the team to provide admin support for a variety of projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Community management of social media channels, provide support with moderation for paid advertising campaigns and seek opportunities for media case studies from social communities.
  • Support the Communications Manager with research and writing media releases, seeking stakeholder approvals, building media lists, gathering assists such as photography and statistics, and liaising with lived experience case studies and internal subject matter experts.
  • Assist in responding to enquiries and requests in the Media and General Enquiries inboxes in a timely fashion.
  • Draft, edit and publish content for the BDI website, including news stories and media releases.
  • Maintain and update the internal BDI Content Calendar and assist with content planning to ensure that topics and messaging are aligned across the organisation.
  • Support the Communications Manager with the delivery of large projects, including the Annual Report and White Paper.
  • Support the creation and distribution of the bi-monthly external newsletter, the Voice of Mental Health Science.
  • Assist the broader Digital Marketing & Media Team with reporting on audience engagement and insights, trends, and benchmarks on digital channels and media.
  • Relevant administration tasks as expected when working within a rapidly growing and evolving organisation.

Skills & Experience Required 

Essential Criteria

1. A qualification in Marketing or Communications, related field and 1-2 years’ work experience in a marketing or communications role with relevant examples of written content and experience working with digital channels.

2. A passion for writing and excellent written communications skills.

3. Experience in moderating and managing social media communities, including but not limited to Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and Instagram.

4. Ability to analyse and derive insights from media and social media reporting data to help inform customer centric communications and optimise digital and media strategies.

5. Excellent interpersonal and oral communications skills, and the ability to work as part of a team with the ability to work independently when needed, take a pro-active approach and complete tasks on time.

6. High level of attention to detail in grammar, writing and proofreading.

7. Demonstrated confidence and self-starter, with a passion to learn.

8. Experience in using the backend of WordPress to draft and upload content.

Desirable Criteria

1. Empathy or alignment with mental health and wellbeing.

2. Experience in the health or research sector.

3. Video editing experience
