Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique ‘translational’ research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products. The Role
The Research Officer (Neurostimulation) plays a key role in supporting projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians in the area of mental health, investigating novel treatments (e.g., Ketamine, Psychedelics, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) for depression and other mental health conditions.
This position sits within the Neuromodulation Research Centre at the Black Dog Institute and is responsible for providing research, coordination, and technical assistance to team clinics and senior staff. The position works collaboratively with the team in neurostimulation and interventional psychiatry, assisting in the development and application of knowledge in the field of mental health to a range of projects conducted by the team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Research Procedures
- Assist in set-up and ongoing coordination of new and existing clinical trials and research projects (including but not limited to preparation of ethics submissions, external contracts, and study materials; project reports; meeting agendas/minutes).
- Liaise with research collaborators, internal and external stakeholders with regard to project implementation and administration (including but not limited to project initiation and monitoring progress).
- Participate in project meetings.
- Assist in conduct of research procedures appropriate to level of training (including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Direct Current Stimulation, neuronavigation, electroencephalography).
- Assist in data collection/entry, management and analysis of study results.
- Assist with literature search/review and data analysis under the supervision of senior researchers.
- Assist in preparation of project-related documents within agreed timeframes (e.g., training/operations protocols, reports, manuscripts, presentations)
Clinic Technical Support
- Maintain and regularly update records/database.
- Provide timely response to clinic technical issues as they arise.
Administration
- Ensure all research procedures are in compliance with applicable protocols and policies/guidelines.
- Attend to and manage research enquiries.
- Ensure research rooms are in presentable order.
Work, Health and Safety
- Comply with all WHS legislation and WHS Policy and Procedures.
- Report any WHS hazards and significant issues to Head of Operations, People & Culture or delegate.

Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria
- A university degree in Psychology (Hons), Neuroscience (Hons), Medicine or other related disciplines; or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience.
- Demonstrated capacity to support conduct research as evidenced by involvement in other research projects, peer reviewed publications, and/or experience of data entry/collection and participant interviews.
- Proven effective record keeping skills (both paper and electronic), including the ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.
- Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of people.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal direction, show initiative and work effectively as a member of a team.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills; ability to multi- task and prioritise.
- Strong computing skills with Microsoft Office and data/statistical computer programs, such as MATLAB and R.
- Familiarity and experience with neurostimulation procedures involving Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation including neuronavigation, and neuroimaging research processes including electroencephalography (EEG), or willingness to learn.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to health and safety.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience with REDCap (e.g., including instrument design, administration of surveys, report generation, setting up alerts/notifications, eConsent, data quality module).
- Experience in clinical trial research coordination.
