About the Institute
Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique ‘translational’ research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products.We join the dots by connecting research answers, expert knowledge, and the voices of lived experience to deliver solutions that impact and boost the health care system for patients and practitioners alike. Our work is used to drive evidence informed change across the rapidly expanding mental health sector and sets the foundations for a brighter and healthier future for all.

Desired Skills and Experience

The Role

The purpose of this position is to support the expanding research portfolio of Black Dog Institute and facilitate continued development and maturation of operational processes to support our research endeavours. The position will drive operational improvement across research governance and risk, embed research impact and monitoring processes, and support development and growth of research support services.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Priorities 

• Finalise and implement a Research Impact Framework

• Deliver a research publication promotion strategy to improve dissemination of research outputs

• Develop a primary OKR and KPI report card for research

• Implement a revised governance model, inclusive of risk monitoring

• Build out robust models for different methodological approaches and analytical systems to support current and future research

• Lead the development and implementation of a dedicated research operations and support plan and budget in accordance with a broader strategic framework and which supports delivery of the diverse portfolio of research programs

Leadership

• Manage and mentor a team to deliver strategic and operational outcomes

• Be a member of, and contribute to, the Senior Management Group

• Collaborate with peers to deliver organisation-wide initiatives and priorities

• Manage external relationships to facilitate partnerships in the development and coordination of research operations and support activities

• Effectively manage change management processes to support implementation of new functions and activities and continuous improvement

• Foster a culture of transparent, effective, timely and appropriate communication

• Represent Black Dog Institute on key stakeholder committees, external forums and meetings as appropriate

Research operations and support

• Lead implementation of research governance program, inclusive of risk monitoring

• Embed a research impact, monitoring and reporting framework

• Provide effective post-award support across the research portfolio, including preparation, review and negotiation of research funding and collaboration agreements

• Support academic career development and mentoring to build research capability and capacity

• Oversee management of research systems, platforms and data governance

• Lead the management, accurate reporting and sustainability of research infrastructure funding programs

• Lead the effective planning and delivery of internal and external capacity building programs, knowledge dissemination activities and information relevant to research such as conferences, funding opportunities, collaborative opportunities and partnerships

• Ensure research policies, procedures and guidelines comply with all legal and regulatory obligations

• Ensure research is managed in accordance with internal policy, operating procedures and frameworks

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria

1. A relevant postgraduate qualification or an equivalent level of knowledge and skills gained through any other combination or education, training and/or experience.

2. Minimum eight years’ experience in a senior research management role.

3. Significant research operational management experience at a senior level preferably within a medical research institute, health or university environment.

4. Experience in contracts management, ethics and governance reporting, study budgeting, site operations and stakeholder management to deliver operational outcomes to support business need.

5. Outstanding planning and organisational skills and the demonstrated ability to manage organisation-wide projects, people and workflows, and to prioritise and meet deadlines.

6. Exceptional written communication, negotiation and research skills including data analysis and reporting, with a proven experience of business communication to an Executive Team or equivalent.

7. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with academic and non-academic professionals at a variety of levels in a collaborative and effective manner.

8. Demonstrated experience of successfully leading and engaging a team, and leading change and business improvement.

9. Proven ability to exercise independent judgement and problem solving with the ability to resolve and address issues as they arise.

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience in a research environment that is consistent with the mission and objectives of the Black Dog Institute, with a good understanding of the broader research context
