Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. The Role

As a member of the Black Dog team, the Finance Business Partner will support the Head of Finance and the Director of Finance and Governance in the provision of financial and management accounting. The Finance Business Partner is a broad accounting and finance role, that covers all facets of organisational financial management.

Duties & Responsibilities

Finance

• End to end management of monthly results and rolling forecast for each allocated Directorate, including variance analysis and completeness and accuracy of Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet.

• Preparation of multi-year budget and quarterly forecasts. 

• Contribute to monthly ELT reporting, quarterly Board reporting and other MRI required reporting.

• Build positive relationships with key stakeholders.

• Financial modelling to support strategic decision making.

• Preparation and review of budgets for external funding applications for grants, tenders and government budget submissions.

Grant Management

• Set up and update grant budgets in financial systems (Adaptive Planning)

• Monitor income and expenditure compared to budget and ensure expenditure is in line with funding agreements

• Complete acquittal reporting.

• Collaborate with the Finance team to identify and implement process improvements and value adding activities.

• Ensure stakeholder compliance with Finance and organisational policies and procedures.

• Provide expert advice on accounting practices, standards and financial management to key team members and stakeholders.

• Raise financial literacy across the Institute and promote Finance best practice, while adhering to the overall BDI strategy.

• Support and direct the Finance Officers in the day-to-day delivery of financial control processes.

• Support Accounts Payable processes through invoice review for allocated Directorates.

• Contribute to the audit process.

• Undertake all other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Finance or Director of Finance and Governance.

Skills & Experience Required 

Essential Criteria

1. Qualified member of professional accounting body e.g., CA, CPA, CIMA and minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Management accounting, financial reporting or professional services accounting.

2. Highly developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels both within and outside the organisation to effectively translate ideas, concepts and information.

3. Demonstrate high levels of accuracy in budgeting, forecasting and processing of actuals and accruals.

4. Advanced capability with Excel and accounting software packages.

5. Demonstrated capacity to analyse and solve problems and use judgement and conceptual skills to make sound decisions.

6. Ability to effectively manage time, set priorities and organise work in an effective and efficient manner to achieve set objectives within the resources available to agreed timelines.

7. Demonstrated experience in the development and successful implementation of procedures and systems. 

8. Ability to demonstrate values of respect and compassion in workplace behaviour.

9. Proven capability to implement and evaluate financial and business strategies and propose solutions to drive continuous quality improvement.

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience in the Not-for-Profit sector

2. An understanding of financial processing as related to research, grants management and acquittals

3. Experience with Adaptive Planning, NetSuite and SAP Concur
