Located on the lands of the Bidiagal Clan of the Dharawal Nation (Randwick, NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. The Role
As a consultant psychiatrist, you will provide strategic clinical leadership, supervision, and support to the multidisciplinary team, including nurses, psychiatry registrars, and other clinicians within the Black Dog Institute’s Neuromodulation and Novel Treatments Clinic (TMS, tDCS, Ketamine, Psychedelics). This role is responsible for shaping and guiding service strategy, ensuring clinical models of care are evidence-based, innovative, and aligned with best practice. You will lead and develop staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. In addition, you will conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, formulate treatment plans, deliver interventions, and actively contribute to the Institute’s clinical research initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Strategy
- Where required provide strategic input into the ongoing development and refinement of the Neuromodulation and Novel Treatments Clinic’s models of care.
- Lead service planning to ensure that clinical practices are innovative, sustainable, and responsive to emerging research evidence.
- Contribute to the Institute’s broader strategic priorities by representing the clinic at leadership forums and working groups.
- Demonstrated ability to provide strategic direction in service delivery, including contributing to the design and improvement of clinical models of care.
- Proven leadership and management capability, including experience in supervising, mentoring, and developing multidisciplinary clinical teams.
People Leadership
- Provide direct leadership, supervision, and mentoring to psychiatry registrars, nurses, and other clinical staff.
- Foster a positive and accountable team culture that supports professional development, wellbeing, and high standards of care.
- Guide team members in translating research evidence into clinical practice and encourage contribution to clinical research projects.
Clinical
• Provide comprehensive clinical assessment and treatment of patients in Black Dog Institute, Neuromodulation and Novel Treatments Clinic
• Ensure detailed patient correspondence is provided to referring GPs and psychiatrists to support appropriate management of patients
• Ensure a high standard of clinical record documentation is maintained. This includes the completion of records to reflect clinical decisions and the keeping of appropriate databases up-to-date
• Be an active participant in the team’s clinical research activities within the (e.g. clinical trials)
• Adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice and ensure clinic policies and procedures reflect this
• Provide clinical supervision and education to registrars, nurses medical students and other team members.
• Responsible for the safe prescribing, management, witnessing, and accurate documentation of Schedule 4 (S4) and Schedule 8 (S8) medications, in accordance with legislative requirements, regulatory standards, and clinical governance protocols.
• Participate in relevant multi-disciplinary team meetings.
• Provides on-call coverage as required, including during periods of staff leave
Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement
• Comply with Black Dog Institute clinical governance policies and programs
• Participate in quality improvement activity and processes
• Fulfil requirements for ongoing maintenance of professional competence and clinical performance, including training program / conference attendance as agreed from time to time
• Participate in peer review and other personal development activities consistent with the relevant specialist medical college requirements to maintain professional standards.
• Addresses medico-legal matters related to patients under their care and informs their supervisor of any complaints received regarding themselves or fellow medical practitioners.
• Ensure compliance with the standards contained within the Australian Council on Health Care Standards Guidelines for Accreditation
Education and Training
• Participate in training programs and any other training courses specified by Black Dog Institute that will enhance personal development, skills and knowledge, and practice requirements
• Be an active member of the clinic team and participate in discussions around future and ongoing clinical research projects
Other
• Participate in Black Dog Institute’s Performance Management and Development Program
• Attend, participate and support administrative meetings as required
Work, Health and Safety
• Ensure self and all staff comply with all WHS legislation WHS Policy and Procedures
• Report any WHS hazards and significant issues to Director of Finance and Governance or delegate
• Work in a safe manner, applying a duty of care
• Train new staff and coach existing staff in WHS practices

Skills & Experience Required
1. Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for specialist registration, with AHPRA and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
2. A higher research degree (MD or PhD) in the field of psychiatry or mental health (preferred).
3. Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice
4. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and risk management
5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education/continuing professional development
6. Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners and in a multidisciplinary health care team
