About the Institute
Located on the lands of the Bidiagal Clan of the Dharawal Nation (Randwick, NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.  Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique ‘translational’ research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products. We join the dots by connecting research answers, expert knowledge, and the voices of lived experience to deliver solutions that impact and boost the health care system for patients and practitioners alike. Our work is used to drive evidence informed change across the rapidly expanding mental health sector and sets the foundations for a brighter and healthier future for all.

Desired Skills and Experience

The Role

This is a key leadership role within Research Development & Support, responsible for shaping and overseeing research governance, integrity, and compliance across the Institute. You’ll work closely with research teams, leadership, and external stakeholders to ensure our governance frameworks are robust, efficient, and aligned with best practice while also enabling research excellence.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lead governance strategy and systems

  • Oversee and continuously improve research governance frameworks, policies, and processes
  • Embed best practice, quality improvement, and risk management across research operations
  • Support implementation of systems and tools that streamline governance activities

Manage research approvals and compliance

  • Coordinate governance review and approval of research studies and amendments
  • Maintain accurate records, reporting, and tracking of research activity
  • Provide insights and reporting to leadership on research performance and compliance

Champion research integrity

  • Support the end-to-end management of research integrity processes and investigations
  • Ensure alignment with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research
  • Maintain confidential, compliant records and support institutional reporting obligations

Support and enable researchers

  • Provide expert advice on governance, ethics, and regulatory requirements
  • Deliver training, resources, and guidance to research teams
  • Support post-award processes to help studies establish successfully

Manage contracts and stakeholder relationships

  • Oversee research contract processes in partnership with legal and governance teams
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners (e.g. HRECs, collaborators)
  • Represent the Institute in forums and committees where appropriate

Selection Criteria

  • Experience in research governance, ethics, and regulatory compliance (health, university, or research institute settings)
  • Strong understanding of research integrity frameworks and GCP
  • People leadership or team management experience
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, systems, and stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and sound judgement
  • Experience with research systems (e.g. REDCap) and Microsoft 365 tools
