About the Institute

Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Desired Skills and Experience

The Role

Reporting to the Lived Experience Program Manager, this role will support the engagement of Lived Experience Advisors within Black Dog Institute. The role will ensure lived experience engagement is aligned with the Lived Experience Engagement Framework to provide meaningful engagement across a suite of projects, while offering guidance throughout the research planning and delivery process.

Duties & Responsibilities

Lived Experience Resource Support Network 

  • Key point of contact for the Lived Experience Advisor Network including recruitment, orientation and development, administration, renumeration and communications.
  • Work in partnership with the Black Dog Institute Research directorate to understand their processes, ensuring that your role and responsibilities are aligned with these.
  • Support the Lived Experience Program Manager in managing the Lived Experience Advisory Network (LERN) and its associated projects and activities.
  • Onboard and enable a network of Lived Experience Advisors from existing databases and partner organisations to work on Black Dog projects.
  • Liaise with the Lived Experience Peer Advisor to ensure Lived Experience Advisors are supported while working on projects to ensure support is aligned with the Lived Experience Team processes and policies.
  • Respond to all general lived experience enquiries from internal and external stakeholders and interested parties, redirecting them to the appropriate personnel as required.
  • Support Lived Experience Advisor engagement logistics and administration.
  • Prepare reports on status of lived experience participation across Black Dog

Project Support 

  • Support the Lived Experience Program Manager with enquiries for lived experience engagement according to the Lived Experience Team Prioritisation Matrix and BDI strategic priorities
  • Under the guidance of the Lived Experience Program Manager plan lived experience engagement across internal projects in collaboration with Black Dog staff, including setting deadlines, prioritising tasks, and assigning team members to various deliverables.
  • Support the capacity building of both staff and Lived Experience Advisors, including coordination and delivery of appropriate resources, tools and training.
  • Guide the engagement of Lived Experience Advisors in initiatives, projects and research across Black Dog Institute using a variety of methodologies that are aligned with the Lived Experience Engagement Framework and Black Dog Institute’s 2022 2026 Strategic Plan.
  • Continuously evaluating projects to ensure engagement with Lived Experience Advisors aligns with the Lived Experience Engagement Framework.

Skills & Experience Required 

  •  A lived experience of mental health challenges or suicide
  • Understanding of mental health research and its aims
  • Expertise working with people with lived and/or living experience that involves skillful conversations and the use of strengths-based recovery orientated ways of working
  • Understanding and empathy of the impact mental health challenges can have on a person and their loved ones
  • Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and ability to manage multiple projects with strong organisational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and adapt as necessary to the demands of multiple projects and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to consult and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • A high-level of computer literacy including Microsoft Suite, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Teams.
  • An ability to work both in a team and independently, with a high level of flexibility and initiative with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and an awareness of reputation and branding implications.
